Get To Know A Program: Southern Maine

The University of Soutnern Maine Huskies play in the Little East Conference, and have been making strides over the last couple of years. Sam Lane is the Head Coach and has been involved with the program since the Malcolm Chase days, so there is some consistency at the helm.

The program suffered a down year in 2010, going 3-11, but rebounded slightly in 2011, going 5-11. In 2012, USM improved a bit more, going 6-10. So far in 2013, the team is 5-7 with four huge Little East games left on their schedule against Plymouth State (today April 17th), Eastern CT State, UMass Boston, and Salem State.

Check out some highlights from USM’s recent win over Western Conn, 11-7.

Some noteworthy plays are at the 2:30 mark where a defender eats a shot, then does a nice flip past man for the GB. The 4:06  mark has a great fake to goal move. At the 5:40 mark we’ve got a big dog with ball running kids over, then the D-Twigging of The Year, at the 5:50 mark, resulting in the turnover. Thanks to @DMidProblems for sending it over!

When you look at USM’s roster, you see a TON of Maine. There are three kids from Massachusetts, two from New Hampshire, one from Vermont, two from Canada, and TWENTY ONE kids from the great state of Maine. That’s home state pride right there. Love it.

Kyle Baker is currently leading the team in scoring with 45 points on 32 goals and 13 assists. Mark White has 36 points on 24 goals and 12 assists. Both players are Seniors. Dylan Kenney and Zack Blauvlet are ground ball machines with 56 and 55, respectively. Ryan Hatch leads the way in goal with a 53% save percentage.
