The Meghan Puls Classic is a great fall scrimmage day in Maryland for a number of D3 teams. Stevenson University will once again be hosting the third annual Meghan Puls Lacrosse Classic this Sunday, October 20 at 10 AM in Mustang Stadium on the Owings Mills campus. This year’s tournament features five teams, including Stevenson University, Goucher College, Virginia Wesleyan College, Franklin & Marshall College and Cabrini College.

Admission is free. A suggested donation of $5 at the gate would be greatly appreciated. All donations and proceeds will benefit The Meghan C. Puls Foundation, Inc., which helps families and children through supporting organizations in the areas of health services and research, youth recreation and education.

Here is a schedule of the day’s games:

10:00 Stevenson VS Cabrini STADIUM
10:00 Franklin & Marshall VS Goucher GRASS FIELD
12:00 Stevenson VS Franklin & Marshall STADIUM
12:00 Virginia Wesleyan VS Cabrini GRASS FIELD
2:00 Goucher VS Virginia Wesleyan STADIUM

We got to check in with every coach, and asked them all three questions. See the questions, and their responses, below:

Who are your captains for 2014? How are captains selected in your program?

Brian Kelly, Goucher – Currently, we have two captains that have been selected by the coaching staff and following fall ball our PLAYERS will nominate and elect two more captains. The two selected captains are Pierce Ingram and Steve Patterson.

JP Stewart, Virginia Wesleyan – We have not elected captains yet, so our seniors will serve that role on Sunday. Our players elect the team captains – we’ll do that during the off-season.

Steve Colfer, Cabrini – Corey Elmer and JoJo Cooper – they are selected by the coaching staff.

Paul Cantabene, Stevenson – Our Captains are: Kyle Holecheck, Connor Curro, Chris DaShiell, and Dimitri Pecunas. We have chosen captains many different ways over the years but this year we talk to 5 or 6 guys we  were very impressed with last year and talk to them about what it means and meant to them to be a captain and the responsibilities that comes with that. Then ask them to think about it for 3 or 4 days and come back to us if they thought they were ready to be a captain and understood what we expect out of them. Once that happen we choose our four captains – We think these 4 individuals embody what it means to be a Student/Athlete at Stevenson.

What are you looking to get out of this Fall event as a lacrosse team?

Brian Kelly, Goucher – This is event is a great event, great competition, great cause and a great venue in which to play.  We are so very proud to compete and help bring awareness to such a worthy foundation and help out a fabulous lacrosse family (the Puls).

JP Stewart, Virginia Wesleyan – Looking to see how competitive our play is & looking to see how fast we play on Sunday.

Steve Colfer, Cabrini – We are looking forward to competing against some really good competition and  to use Sunday’s games as an assessment of where we are in preparation for the Spring 2014 season. We use Fall ball as a way to get our new and returning players on the same page in terms of how we want to play together this year.

Paul Cantabene, Stevenson – All we are looking out for in the fall is to see how the new guys fit into our system and if they can develop into a good player. What are their strengths and weakness but more importantly we are trying to get them into a great routine so they can adapt to college life easier. We want to see what they can do and what they can’t do so  in the spring we are ready go. A good fall for us is that no gets hurt! If we can do that it’s a good fall!

Todd Cavallaro, Franklin & Marshall – We have a great opportunity to play against two very good opponents. This will allow our freshmen to get their feet wet as well as continuing to develop our overall team to prepare them for the spring. We are looking forward to a great weekend.

Why do you choose to play in the Meghan Puls Classic? What does it mean to your guys to be a part of something that is bigger than a simple fall lacrosse play day?

Brian Kelly, Goucher – Our program hopes to measure ourselves against and some of the best programs in the country by our play on the field.  We will use this as an opportunity to get better and evaluate our entire roster under game conditions versus different opponents.

JP Stewart, Virginia Wesleyan – Travis Puls, Meghan’s younger brother, played 4 years for us at VWC (2009-2012) & was a 3 time ALL-ODAC player.  The Puls family was, & still is, a big part of our “Marlin Lacrosse Family” so it is a no-brainer to participate.  Great cause, & one that strikes close to home with the relationship we have with Cassie, Tim, Tim Jr, & Travis.  On top of that it is, IMO, one of the top DIII fall tournaments out there!

Steve Colfer, Cabrini – We choose to play in the Meghan Puls Classic because I have known Coach Puls and Cantabene for many years and thought it was a great opportunity for our program to support a tremendous cause and have the young men of Cabrini Lacrosse be involved with a great foundation. As a coach, you are always looking for opportunities to teach your players how important it is to be part of something bigger then oneself and we see our participation in the Meghan Puls Classic as a  prime example of this.  We look forward to a productive and rewarding experience.

Paul Cantabene, Stevenson – It means a great deal to our program to support Coach Puls – It has been a tremendous part of our success here and to support his foundation and all the great work it does in the community is important to our team. Life is not easy for a lot of people and if we can help raise awareness to the foundations cause and help make it better that’s what we are going to do. Tim Puls is a valuable member of our family and we are going to do everything we can to support him and his family. That what Stevenson Lacrosse program is all about! Family!

Todd Cavallaro, Franklin & Marshall – It is an honor to be a part of something special and support the Meghan Puls Foundation. We are excited for a great day of lacrosse but more importantly… remembering and honoring Meghan Puls. Thank you for having us!

Best of luck to all the teams participating this weekend in the Meghan Puls Classic! If you’re in the area, stop by, check out some great D3 lacrosse, and help out a most excellent cause!
